The first medical journal club on Twitter was launched by me and co-fellows during our allergy/immunology fellowship program in 2008. A poster was presented during the 2009 ACAAI meeting and the abstract was published in the Annals of Allergy and Immunology. Fellows and attendings from different A/I programs, other physicians and the general public participated in several sessions of the allergy journal club (#AllergyJC). I discontinued that first journal club in 2009 due to lack of time and the logistics of transition from a fellow to an assistant professor at University of Chicago.
There was a medical journal club on Twitter in 2010, and a urology journal club in 2011. The second one uses an "asynchronous" format to account for the different time zones of participants and the discussion lasts 48 hours: Twitter Chat Tools for International Urology Journal Club - BJUI http://buff.ly/1dvAqgB.
